Background

He is a consultant gastrointestinal histopathologist and also holds a honorary contract as senior lecturer in London. He was appointed in 2010 but has been a consultant histopathologist since 1991 when he was first appointed as a consultant senior lecturer in the University department of histopathology, Bristol Royal Infirmary.

Training

He trained in medicine at the universities of St Andrews and Manchester qualifying (MBChB) in 1981. After spending a year as a senior house officer in pathology at Manchester Royal Infirmary, he took up the post of Demonstrator and later Lecturer (honorary senior registrar) in histopathology at the University department of Pathology, Newcastle upon Tyne. During that time he completed his training in histopathology and obtained the MRCPath qualification in 1990. He was also engaaged in research in colorectal cancer and was awarded M.D in 1992.

Clinical interests and areas of expertise

His clinical expertise is in gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary histopathology and has more than 25 years of experience in these areas. As a senior histopathologist his main focus is the histopathology of the lower alimentary tract.

  • Inflammatory bowel disease
  • Barrett’s oesophagus
  • Dysmotility disorders of alimentary tract

Research interests

He has a long standing interest in research in colorectal cancer particularly in cell proliferation of the large bowel, the role of NSAIDs in preventimg colorectal cancer, and dysplasia in ulcerative colitis. He has published some 60 original articles and in the past five years has co-supervised two Phd students and examined two Phd theses.
