He is consultant colorectal surgeon at the Colorectal and Peritoneal Oncology Centre located in one of Europe’s largest comprehensive cancer hospitals.

He is fluent in English, Turkish, Urdu, French, Spanish and Arabic.

Training

He trained at St. Mary’s Hospital Medical School where he obtained his MBBS degree in 2000. He undertook specialist colorectal training in the North-West London deanery programme and went on to complete a PhD at Imperial College London in 2008.

He secured the FRCS exam in 2011 and undertook a high volume laparoscopic colorectal fellowship at St. Mark’s Hospital, London in 2012, followed by a fellowship there in intestinal failure, inflammatory bowel disease surgery, inherited cancers and polyposis, recurrent cancer, restorative proctocolectomy and coloproctology.

In 2014, he joined one of Europe’s largest comprehensive cancer hospitals as a consultant surgeon at The Colorectal & Peritoneal Oncology Centre (CPOC).

Clinical interests and areas of expertise

He specialises in coloproctology and complex minimally invasive (keyhole) and open surgical techniques to treat early, advanced, and recurrent tumours of the appendix, colon, rectum, and anus. This includes tumours that have spread to the lining of the abdomen (peritoneum), for which he performs cytoreductive surgery with hyperthermic intra-peritoneal chemotherapy (CRS/HIPEC). Over 150 CRS/HIPEC operations are carried out each year making it one of the highest volume units in the world. He is a member of the sarcoma team, the lead for endoscopy at the trust, the consent lead for the trust and a national laparoscopic colorectal surgery trainer.

Research interests

He has developed evidence-based synthesis techniques to better guide healthcare decision-making and published over 100 peer-reviewed research papers, some of which have been used by institutions such as the UK National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) as part of their guidance. He was a member of the 2007 ‘Healthcare for London-A Framework for Action’ team reviewing the capital’s healthcare needs for the next decade. He has an interest in translating biomedical research into new technologies for patient benefit and has obtained research grants from Innovate UK, the Medical Research Council, the Technology Strategy Board and the National Institute for Healthcare Research.
